Fighting SARS-CoV-2 virus effectively with light: German-Dutch cooperation develops
highly effective LED tubes without harmful UV-C radiation
Aurora Lichtwerke and Dutch lighting innovation company Seaborough have developed an LED tube which is able to actively fight coronaviruses using the unique BIOVITAE technology without the use of UV-C disinfection technology, which is often harmful to human exposure. The new lighting innovation is expected to be available starting September 2021.
Eichstätt/Amsterdam/München, 28. April 2021 – Aurora Lichtwerke and the Dutch lighting innovation company Seaborough announce today that they are jointly developing an innovative LED tube that, thanks to the novel BIOVITAE technology, is able to actively fight SARS-CoV-2 viruses and at the same time provide a pleasant and, above all, harmless lighting.
The AUROSUN LED tube developed by the specialists at Aurora Lichtwerke integrates the patented BIOVITAE technology, which has a proven antiviral, antibacterial and sanitization effect through the emission of specific wavelengths in the visible light spectrum. It fits perfectly into conventional linear and panel lighting, which makes it easy and uncomplicated to use, for example, in offices, hospitals, medical practices and shops.
High security with continous sanitization
What makes this sanitization technology so unique is that it can be used continously and without risk for people in the room and is therefore different from conventional UV-C disinfection technology, which is harmful to humans if exposed directly. The AUROSUN LED tube with the integrated BIOVITAE technology is extremely efficient, as the sanitization effect takes place where it is most important, namely in the presence of people, where the risk of infection is the greatest. The BIOVITAE technology itself is an invention of the Italian company Nextsense (a company of the P&P Group), an industrial and commercial partner of Aurora Lichtwerke. The products are continuously optimized together in order to guarantee the highest possible efficiency and customer satisfaction.
The unique BIOVITAE technology
The patented BIOVITAE technology with the dual function of light and sanitization, uses the blue range of visible light and reduces germs (bacteria, viruses, spores) whenever the light is switched on – completely safe for people and animals in occupied rooms. The fact that the BIOVITAE lamps meet the highest photobiological safety level according to IEC 62471 has also been certified by TÜV and the effectiveness against germs has been confirmed by several independent scientific institutes, including the Bundeswehr Institute of Microbiology in Munich.
The problem with many of the LED retrofit solutions currently on the market is that they are electrically incompatible with the existing lights. The developers of the AUROSUN LED tube recognized this issue early on and solved it with Seaborough’s patented oneTLed technology, which means that the light source fits into any existing luminaire. LED tubes are increasingly replacing the classic fluorescent tubes, which contain toxic mercury and consume significantly more energy than LED tubes. This trend will intensify from 2023 when the production and placing on the market of classic fluorescent lamps are banned in the EU. That is why Aurora Lichtwerke and Seaborough are positioning themselves accordingly in order to make a positive contribution to the accelerated changeover to LED technology with a simultaneous germ-reducing additional function.
Pieter Six, CEO of Seaborough, explains: “By combining two powerful technologies in one solution, we are contributing to the fight against the SARS-CoV-2 virus and helping to make traditional fluorescent lamps, which contain harmful substances, superfluous. With our oneTLed technology, we can ensure that this invention fits into practically all existing luminaires, which will facilitate its rapid acceptance. ”
“With Seaborough we have found the right partner to produce LED tubes for replacing fluorescent lamps compatible with all luminaires,” explains Dr. Roland Michal, managing director of Aurora Lichtwerke. “By using the BIOVITAE technology in the AUROSUN LED tubes, existing lights can be upgraded to sanitization systems when they illuminate a room. And the whole thing is absolutely safe for humans and animals. ”
Martijn van Rheenen, founder of Seaborough and CEO of the partner Momentum Capital, emphasizes the urgency: “Together we are able to offer a lighting solution that overcomes numerous challenges at once. In addition to actively fighting the SARS-CoV-2 virus in all areas in which the AUROSUN LED tube is used, it also contributes to the goals of limiting climate change and promoting the use of toxic chemical elements such as mercury dispense.”
“We are honored to be working with Aurora and Seaborough,” said Mauro Pantaleo, CEO of the P&P Patents and Technology Group. “The partnership represents an ideal fit for BIOVITAE by linking our microbicidal technology with oneTLed and combining both our technologies into one the most important consumables in the general lighting market. Together we will develop and rapidly scale products that are able to improve indoor hygiene and increase occupational safety through the use of BIOVITAE technology.”
In view of the highly advanced development, the two cooperation partners Aurora Lichtwerke and Seaborough are planning the market launch of the new AUROSUN LED tube in September 2021. It can be used simply and easily in conventional linear and louvre luminaires and is therefore perfect for offices and hospitals, for example , Doctor’s offices and shops.
